Hi All
I have bought the Shure-SM 57 and received it just now (It has costed me all my savings). But to my Horror, it doesnt work

The store has given me a cable which has a XLR End at one end (for the Mic) and the other end has a Mono-Pin (like a Guitar Cable's end). I tried to connect it as :
Shure-SM57 ---->Pre-Amp----->Line-In of my Computer.
But I dont hear anything
.
I then connected it to my Guitar-Amp to check if the Mic was ok, but this too produces no Sound. Even tapping on the Mic's mouth doesn't produce any clicks or sound.

I dont understand, what is that, which I'm doing worng.
1. Does the Mic need any External Power ??? (But there's is'nt any provision for it)
2. How can I check whether the Mic is Working properly ???
Kindly help me out Guys, I'm every sad and worried. I even feel like crying
