Hello
Hello,
My name is Steven Clevenger. I am 35 years old and in the US Navy out in San Diego, CA. I have always wanted to learn to play guitar but have always quit or found excuses to stop trying. I'm not sure how musically inclined I am but LOVE guitar so I guess that counts for something. I am a classic rock junkie particularly Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc...
I would appreciate any help or advice from anyone, I am a "bottom rung" beginner who really is just trying to learn. Thanks.!!

Welcome aboard, Steven! Glad you're giving it a shot....I've been frustrated enough to want to quit a few times myself, but just keep picking away until I get through that slump. These folks have been good about encouraging me to stick with it....we should start up a support group section on the forum for that LOL

Thanks a lot everyone!! I don't think I've ever signed up for a forum and had such a wonderful response!! I've been stumming for 2 days now and so far so good. I think making "tiny break throughs" has helped keep me motivated. I will say my fingers and wrist are sore as heck!!! I am having problems getting my fingers to stop touching the other strings when I try to do some cords but it's getting better too!!

Hello Steven and welcome to the site...
I think your love for the guitar will determine you to pick it up and never quit again.There is no other way.You don't have to be musically inclined to start playing the guitar and the love you mention can really work miracles!I am also a calssic rock lover!...Good luck trying to learn the guitar.Any questions you might have shall meet their answers in this site,there will always be someone to help you out.So,what are you waiting for??

Thanks everyone, I have been practicing using some of the lessons in the lesson's section and it's going well so far. I'm actually starting to strengthen up my left hand a bit and starting to make some progress with forming chords.
I found just two days ago I was having problems getting my fingers to not hit the other strings while making a G chord. I'm using Kirks lesson that goes from G to D and I think I've almost got that transition. I'm just going to keep plugging away.
I do have one question......are there any exercises other than playing that I can do to strengthen and make my left hand and wrist more flexible? Thanks.

There's lots of things you can use. Personally I like theraputty(kinda like silly putty but a bit stronger). Other things I've heard are stress balls or those grip thingies(kinda look like a big nutcracker w/ a spring LOL...cant remember what they're actually called).

I know what you're talking about. I'll have to get one of those. Kind of serve a dual purpose. I can strengthen the hand and use it to relieve stress when I want to hit something....lol
