Any suggestions?

hi I'm looking to upgrade to a better guitar. At present i play an encore ovation copy electro-acoustic which I bought ages ago. I'm now looking for a better electro-acoustic. I want one with low action, small (preferably cut away) body, thin neck, preferably thinline. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've been looking at the crafter SA (my budget is too small for a taylor T5!) (i know it's more of a semi-acoustic) online, and haven't found one locally to try, although I'm receiving unfavourable reviews about crafters. Any comments on this and in light of my preferences?

If anyone out there can help me I'd love to hear from you

cheers

I am currently working at a small store/studio that sells Crafter guitars.

First thing: I was just recently told that Crafter may be no more.Or at least having to stop making some of their stuff. There is talk that Fender was suing them since Crafter's acoustics and acoustic/electrics are "too similar" to Fenders stuff. Also, Hohner, which was making a bowl shaped guitar, very similar to the Ovation Celebrity series (different sound hole patterns, but really, really nice guitars!) for copyright violations, etc, etc.

Now, that being said. The Crafter acoustic/electrics, the DV.TV series and the SM series are really super nice guitars for a decent price. I have played one of the TV and one of the SM series each. The tone was quite nice. Full sound, not too bass heavy, strong high end. Plugged in sounded very good. Clear definition. Very nice feeling and action on the neck. Quality of workmanship...I could find no flaws anywhere. Unfortunately, these are some of the ones being questioned in the lawsuit, so they may be disappearing soon.

The SA...well, I was excited when I saw that on the web site.
But when the Company rep brought one in....I was very disappointed in the playability and the sound. Sound, both acoustic and electric, was sad.

The playability was very stiff. The action was way too high for me. True, that can be adjusted, but it still felt very stiff. The strings felt like you had to really hit them to get any sound out of it.

The pickups....eh, well, the bridge pickup sounded like an inexpensive piezo pickup. The other Crafter pups sounded Far superior to what this sounded. The "electric" pup was a disappointment, too. It sounded too similar to the bridge pup. I tried it plugged into a guitar amp, then into a PA system. Thing sounded the same.

So, I'd rather go for the new Ibanez Montage if you were thinking of a guitar that can do both electric and acoustic tones.

Or, the Epi Les Paul Ultra II. It's the one that has a low impedance pup embedded in the last spot on the neck near the neck PUP, so you can get acoustic tones from that. Don't know how much that is though.

But, personally, I was very disappointed in the Crafter SA guitar. I really liked the SM and the TV models, though.

Sorry I don't have anything positive about the SA, but I thought you'd rather hear something from a first hand experience whether it be good or bad. Wouldn't want you throwing your hard earned money out for something you'd regret.

Hope this helps.

Great to have a hands on review of products like this, Andy.
So the Darth Vader of the guitar world tries to take down another company. Fender is infamous for this kind of thing.

Well, that is what the owner told me. I haven't read or seen anything on it myself. But I can't imagine the company rep telling him that without it having some substance to it. And I really do like the Crafter TV series....mmmmm, maybe in a few months...?

But I was quite disappointed with the. It looked nice, but it just didn't play well at all.

Hi Andy

Thanks so very much for the "insider" review! No good a guitar looking stunning and sounding poor so I really appreciate your help, and it's true, pennies are to previous these days to be wasted.
I'll look into the other guitar you suggested! Already had a quick look on the net and the Ibanez montage really catches my attention!
One thing I forgot to mention in my first post...I have a roland AC60 acoustic amp, is this still suitable for the hybrid guitars, it produces a fantastic clear acoustic sound!
Really appreciate your help and insight!
Thanks again for such a comprehensive and useful post!

Me too! I think I'd be willing to trade in a couple guitars to get that one. Anyone know what the list price is yet?

Problem is that supply is out in UK.
Local dealers say should be in by end of Aug. But can't get to try before I buy anywhere!
Prices: around £475 for solid cedar top
£450 for maple laminate top
£55 for case!

Obviously this info. is for the UK. I reckon you'd get it cheaper and easier in Canada!

Nutty
One of the sales guys at Sam Ash looked it up on their computer. Nothing in stock as 2 weeks ago, but due in around the middle of May. He said the prices ranged form $599.99 to $799.99 depending upon wood and finish. He didn't say that included a case or not.

I keep thinking about getting a new acoustic/electric, but then I sit & play my Ovation. then think again. Is it the tones I want , or is it just a new toy? To me, my ovation through the sound system, sounds as good as a couple of other acoustic/electrics with more and supposedly better electronics.

So, other than the round bowl tilting the guitar back toward me, making me look like I have a huge beer gut, do I really need a new guitar??

But the new Ibanezs do look nice. And from the sounds, even on Youtube, sounds pretty good.

I don't know, I just don't know.....
