Another Runaway Girl

Hi guys, Carol M posted an idea on the Our University thread about doing a rap based on the theme of a Runaway girl, I did a short demo for that thread and have tried to build on that, Carol did a great song so she's a hard act to follow but this is a different take on the theme, I can't rap so that was a bit of a sticking point, this song is also a bit experimental and is a vocal laid over a hip hop track, this was a bit difficult to get right but I've tried my best, it was fun doing it , hope it's ok as it is a bit unusual, Here are the lyrics

RUNAWAY GIRL

Runaway girl like a runaway train
Gonna hit the buffers gonna crash again

She doesn't know what she's running for
She just packed her clothes and ran out the door

She doesn't know where she wants to go
She's just gotta get out and that's all she knows

Runaway girl like a runaway train
Gonna hit the buffers gonna crash again

Runaway girl are you sure it's right
There's a lot of darkness in the city lights
Don't be a victim in an angry world
Your people love you runaway girl

Runaway girl like a runaway train
Gonna hit the buffers gonna crash again

She doesn't know what she's running for
She just packed her clothes and ran out the door

She doesn't know where she wants to go
She's just gotta get out and that's all she knows

Runaway girl like a runaway train
Gonna hit the buffers gonna crash again

Runaway girl guess you had to go
You had your reasons but only you know
They didn't listen to a word you said
How could they know what was in your head

Runaway girl like a runaway train
Gonna hit the buffers gonna crash again

She doesn't know what she's running for
She just packed her clothes and ran out the door

She doesn't know where she wants to go
She's just gotta get out and that's all she knows

Runaway girl like a runaway train
Gonna hit the buffers gonna crash again

Runaway girl you went off the rails
It's easy to run when all else fails
They meant to help you not push you away
Runaway girl let them have their say

Runaway girl like a runaway train
Gonna hit the buffers gonna crash again

She doesn't know what she's running for
She just packed her clothes and ran out the door

She doesn't know where she wants to go
She's just gotta get out and that's all she knows

Runaway girl like a runaway train
Gonna hit the buffers gonna crash again

Runaway girl get off that train
The route your taking will lead to more pain
Stop at the station and think for a while
The ones that love you are missing their child

End slow fade out

Neat Idea Carol (And a cool challenge)

Best Wishes

Chris

I'm fine thank you, hope you and yours are too.
If you're going to change the mix Chris, can I suggest that you use headphones while you're panning, I think you'll get a much clearer feel for where you position each track.

When all else fails, read the instructions.

Pretty cool! The off-beat vocals works pretty good most of the time, but I would put the chorus back on-track and go back to the off-beat during the vocals.
Ditto on the comments by Jomi.

Thanks for having a listen cshude, I think I rushed this a bit so I'm going to remix it and I'll try and get the chorus tighter, it was the first track I tried to match vocals to, before I've just played and sung, getting into recording certainly has it's challenges but it's good fun

nice one, had to use the headphones to hear it, thought the vocals could have had the volume much louder though. creative

I probably never listen to how other songwriters write their songs, I just write on using my own imagination. windsong

Thanks for those comments Tom and for listening, I'm going to rework this as it was quite an interesting song to do

Thanks for listening Windsong, I did this as separate tracks and I think the volume was uneven, sorry you couldn't hear it very well, I'm quite happy doing this song again though so I think the next version should be a lot cleaner

Best Wishes

Chris

hi Chris, can you give me some tips for getting reverb like you do. I did my Runaway Girl on Audacity (sorry Tekker!) but can't get Reverb to sound subtle enough - it sounds like I'm in an echo-y cave/cathedral or something. I ended up using Delay on minumum settings which was OK but not ideal.

Hi Carol,

I used a chorus and a standard reverb, try doing something using a chorus audacity should have that, mixcraft has a reverb called Jons Lite which just lifts the vocal slightly, but they go all the way up to Cathedral which echos big time, from your description the reverb you're getting is a room or small church, you should be able to download some more plugins for various reverbs, this song also has an Acappella chorus effect and a big and bright reverb on some of the music tracks but the high vocal just has a chorus and standard reverb, I'd skip using Delay to enhance a track, have a go with Chorus and see what you think. Good to hear from you and I hope you and yours are all in good spirits

Best Wishes

Chris
