I'm curious as to how long it took everyone else to be able to solo? What was your main focus in practice (scales, improv, etc)?

What's the best way to lean the SRV chunk 'a chunk (shuffle)? I'm obsessed with Cold Shot (I even had a dream about it last night).
Even though I've been playing acoustic prior to this new guitar, my fingers feel like I caught them in the lawn mower I hope they recover by the time I get off work tonight!

Playing for 10 years doesn't mean anything. I've played w/ guys who've only played for a year or 2 that can smoke me. I wish I'd have taken lessons years ago. Being self-taught takes much longer and sometimes develops bad habits.
I've been checking out the lessons on Utube and I'm learning quite a bit.

Hello again my friend...
I think that you are being way too modest there.Ten years of experience gives you a huge head start that noone with one or two years of experience could compare with you.I think you should do something about your self-esteem.You spoke of lessons.I myself have a teacher but what i do i do it mostly on my own.Try the guitar pro and check out various tabs that really make the difference.I am with you my friend and i do not just believe but I KNOW so that you are great....

Thanks. I just wish I would have studied more theory, scales and such. My parents made me take 5 years of piano lessons when I was very young but I don't remember enough to help w/ the guitar. Like most people, I'm impatient and want to only play songs. That's fine until you're playing with a band and they throw in a tune you've never played. Sometimes it's a real struggle.
BTW- I notice you're in Greece. I've always wanted to go there (some day I will).

Hello again my friend...
Although I am new to the guitar I can understand you perfeclty on your impatience. The thing is this.If you try to enjoy more what you are playing it will be easier.Sometimes I stress myself because of the great wish to play more and more and learn as much as I can. Then is when I loose my patience and don't play good.If I let myself go and think nothing more but the pleasure my guitars are giving me I can play better and really enjoy myself...Theory is easier for you to learn because of your huge experience and as for the new"challenges"of a new melody they will come to you.Just take it easy and it wiil all be ok!At this point do not forget that what you can play rather easy is also difficult for other people to play when they come up to it for the first time.I have faith in you,do not give up...
I am from greece yes,but cuurently I am in romania for my studies.I did not chech where you are from...
Allways a pleasure talking to you.
Sincerelly yours...
Theo

Hi Theo,
I've determined that I need to dedicate specific time to practice and study theory. What I've found, is that after I force myself to study something new (just for 10min), I usually tinker around with it for a few minutes afterwards and sometimes work it into something I already know. The result it that I spend twice as much time playing and more often 'cause I'm not dreading the un-fun stuff.
This weekend I started messing around with some classical Spanish stuff. I love it & it's not that hard, just different & fun.
What style do you like to play?

Hello again Cowchip(really, what is your name?)....
Once again, you describe doing what most of people do.It is yet a common thing to like to play more than you study, but on the other hand there is no other way of improving especially in my case....
You mentioned classic spanish songs.Maybe here you could help me.I am looking for an old melody(or song)that is known in my country as"the spanish retreival"and I don't know how it is really called.I too like classic spanish songs but no solos such as songs by Paco de Lucia.I like the Asturias though by Segovia.Anyway,it is hard for me to play such melodies and I can't get my hands on any tabs also...
Sicne you asked,I like playing classic rock songs, dust in the wind or stairway to heaven for example. That is the reason I started playing the guitar in the first place.I get the feeling that since you are playing the guitar you must like classic rock also...
Good luck on your practice.Have a nice day and I hope we talk again soon...

I like to play anything I can manage to play without too much frustration. Next, I'd like to learn some Jerry Reid but I don't think I'm patient enough. I've found that you can "cheat" some of the Spanish stuff to make it less complicated. It's not that bad.

Hello Rob...
It is nice to finally meet you(knowning your name).I think you misunderstood. At the moment I do not have any tabs to start playing some spanish stuff although I would like to some day.It would be rather difficult to try playing something like that cause I am in the beginning, but I wouldn't say no to a good challenge. At the moment I try to play songs involving different techniques in order to make a small start in various ways.Yesterday I tried my first tapping lesson that I got from a moderator in this site.I really like it here.I get to meet guitarists and make new friends, discuss about problems and learn many things.I am really happy and excited that I joined...
I wish you a good night(it is past midnight where I am)...
Good luck with your playing and your patience
See you..

Theo,
I've found everything I've ever wanted on Utube. I've learned lots of stuff I'd have never thought of had I only used tabs. There's lots of tabs available online as well.
Try going to Utube and typing "guitar lessons" in the search box. That will keep you busy for a while.
What's the weather like there? We're finally getting sunny and warm (it's been a LONG COLD winter/spring).
Rob

Hello again Rob...
I just did what you said.Indeed there are a lot of new stuff for me there, enough to keep me busy for a VERY long time.Thank you for the tip.Up to now I thought that as a beginner I should only work with tabs, but I found some easy(in the way it is explained what I should do)lessons.I will surely keep an eye there. Thanks again...
The weather is fine here also,it is getting warmer. If I was at home I would think seriously to pay a visit to some beach .I really like it when it is sunny, who doesn't?....
talk to you soon Rob,have a nice day...
