I find that knowing the lyrics 'real well' helps. So I sing them whenever I can get away with it, and then I can concentrate more on the guitar and less on them when trying to do both.
Singing on stage in front of people, I think it's always best to keep the lyrics going and let the guitar catch up if it gets awry or clunks a chord. So knowing the lyrics to the nth degree helps that too.

To add to Allthumbs comment, I often use word(s) from one line to be a reminder of the next line's starting word(s).
Not sure I explained that well -
For example, from Yesterday: '...seemed so far away' then I somehow have in my mind that 'now I...' comes next.
