Should I Tune Down or Up?
Good Evening to Everyone: Sheet music for "Outside" by Staind
says to tune Elec. Gtrs. to:
6 = Ab 3 = Db
5 = Eb 2 = Gb
4 = Bb 1 = Bb
I think I should tune the 6th string down 8 half steps, rather than up 6 half steps....Is this correct? Thanks, Midnight

You really can't tune strings lower than C without the strings becoming too slack. That is a custom tuning , looks like forths. I don't like the idea of tuning up that high either. Unless you have more than one guitar. tuning back and forth between standard and that will shorten your string life. Try tuning down first but, I think you will find it won't work out too well.

It sounds to me like they did it on a seven-string guitar. They're usually tuned BEADGBE, so it would be much closer to that tuning (omitting the high 'E' string).

Outside is in Eb, I have no idea where that tuning came from.

Thanks very much for the replies and help.....the alternate tuning site is great "Thumbs".....I believe I have arrived at the conclusion that this tuning was accomplished on electric baratone guitar such as the Fender Jaguar Baratone....that is designed for much lower tuning than standard.....Thanks!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
