Tuning problems.

Evening everyone. I just bought my first guitar a few hours ago and have been tuning it for a hour now. I'm still on the first two notes. I can't get E fret 5 to sound ANYTHING like A at all. I read all of the how-to's but nothing works. I can't get them to sound like online tuners at all either /=

Alan Horvath has a tutorial on changing strings that eliminates a lot of the stretching issues it's here;
Alan Horvath | Stringing, Cleaning and Tuning Your Guitar

What he says makes a lot of sense to me.

Maddog - doesn't your electric tuner have an external mic? If not, pick up something like a Korg CA-30.....they're only around $20, and will tune acoustic or electric instruments. I use mine to tune my acoustic guitars and mandolin, and also on my electrics if I'm not near my pedalboard (which has a pedal tuner on it).

But you should try to get the hang of "relative tuning" anyways (tuning the strings relative to one another)......if you're using the 5th fret method, you should be able to easily hear which one is higher or lower because you're listening to the same note (5th fret on the lower string, next string open). It's good to know how to do that because if you happen to not be near a tuner but need to tune to other guitars, you can just have them give you a note and tune your guitar to it. You might not be at "concert pitch", but at least your guitar and theirs will be in tune with one another!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
