  Thumb control in "Easy Picking"

I tend to play the chords as T M T I instead of T R I M so that the thumb keeps tiredly busy in alternating 3 bass strings like a thumb practice I ever did.
It's really easier if the fingers pick as T R I M.
Is it the rule wrong that thumb controls 3 bass strings? Or the rule is just not proper to this lesson?
How should I practice my right hand?
Thanks

Leon
