i used to get 'told off' for doing this by my old guitar teacher, he used to say it was a lazy technique! - but i use other fingers, and my thumb to mute some strings. a c chord on the 1st 3 frets for example, i use my 3rd finger for the c bass, and also use it to mute the open e, or my thumb depending on the next chord.
although you could play the open e if you wanted to play a c chord 1st inversion.
