Alternate Tunings

Suppose someone wanted to tune a guitar so the practicing of the right hand techniques would sound OK without fretting with the left hand, what are the possibilities? I assume DADGAD would work, but are there others? Dropped D wouldn't work because the other strings would still have to be fretted.

I know I could tune the strings so that it plays say an E chord, or an A chord unfretted, but would that put undue strain on the neck? I assume that tuning 'down' would be better for the guitar. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
