A small add on to fretscource's post is if you know the key of the song is relative to C#minor, (a perfectly equivelent way to say that previous sentence is to say the song is in a key relative to E major) is basically all you need to know, and the verse and chorus might have different tonal centers.
If you learn how to play songs, then you learn songs. If you learn how to improvise, then you learn music.
