Hendrix used 10s tuned down to Eb. Better for bending.
Also, with a good hollowbody guitar, made out of a super resonate wood like limba, I get all the tone I need to cut through the mix. I have a Hamer Newport Korina Pro. It's a dead ringer for the blues. It has SD Seth Lover P/ups.
