Stuck on harmonics

When i went to the begginners guide for harmonics i found myself so frustrated that i couldnt get the harmonics out of the guitar i dont know how exactly the harmonic work when it comes to picking the string and lightly touching the string with my left hand. When i do it it sounds like i am just turning down the sound on the guitar a bit. Am know i am doing it wrong, but i want to know is harmonics important could i skip them for now and then come back to them later when i learn some of the other styles?

You can use harmonics in some songs and in improvising if you get used to them, but I've never really found that they are a necessity. Certainly if you are just starting out, learn some other styles first. If you find that you know a lot of styles and you think that harmonics might "unlock" some new ideas for your playing, then go for it. I didn't really make use of them until about a year after I began playing...

Some of the tunes in the lessons have harmonics. They do tend to have less volume than fretted notes. You do have to pick them harder and it is best to use an much fingernail as you can to pick them with. It is best to start with the notes at the 12th fret. They are easiest. When you have them working move to the other frets. Don't let it get to you, it can take a long time to get the trick of it.
I looked at the vid and it works for me. It is very short, just the length of time it takes to play one note. I suggest you post to Clancy in the trouble shooting forum for help with that.
Move on and come back to it every now and then.

I can see and hear that OK, CP. It's a very short movie, done back in the early days of this site when it was hosted on a shared server with very little bandwidth. I should redo all those movies ... I'll add it to the list.

Harmonics are just a little tiny detail in the world of playing guitar. Don't worry about them for a while; I'd concentrate on chords, moving smoothly between chords ... stuff like that ... the meat and potatoes of playing guitar.

It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
