Hi allthumbs.

From what I can gather, 'call and response' describes the interplay between two or more elements of a musical arrangement. One part has its say, the vocal for example, then that phrase is answered by an instrument, sax for example. Jazz is full it, especially the Big Band tunes. The horn sections were often arranged with one bank of horns playing some phrase which set it up for another bank of horns to reply with its own phrase ... the two parts being the sum total.

That's my understanding. I could be completely off the mark, though.
