Interesting how he still has a fine singing voice and hits every note exactly but he seems not to be able (or not willing) to sustain his notes and clips them off. Maybe because he has more of a wobble (not really vibrato) now. Also it gets better towards the end and he looks happier too. Can it be that such an accomplished artist had nerves ??
The video I have seen on YouTube I think was made a few years ago in Canada. He suffered a stroke and lost some of the power in his voice. I think that was his latest recording of IYCRMML.

Carol m, I'm sure glad you posed that question to Les, I've always had the same problem as you.

Yes Skip, its amazing what we can learn while 'wasting' our time on the Forum. I have so many learning curves going on since I became addicted to GFB&B its hard to keep up.

Imagine having a stroke and still being able to sing and play like that!

Carol,

I just finished tabbing out the lead for this song in GP5 about a week ago. It doesn't sound too bad if you want to take a look at it, or anyone else for that matter!

A few quotes about GL.

...and mine first .....

"The music of Gordon is timeless. His music is simple and easy to listen to. His lyrics? Mind-probing but fun. Lightfoot is the quintessential melodic & lyrical poet." - LCJones

“Gordon Lightfoot, everytime I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last forever. " - Bob Dylan

"I don't think anybody before or since has had the impact on Canadian culture, through popular music or folk music, that Gordon Lightfoot has had." - Ian Tyson

"I've always been trying to write songs like Lightfoot. A song of mine like 'Come Monday' is a direct result of me trying to write a Gordon Lightfoot song."
- Jimmy Buffett

"Canadian Railroad Trilogy is an extremely fine piece of songwriting. " - Johnny Cash

"Gordon Lightfoot looms pretty large in my life as a writer and an artist in general. I never travel anywhere without at least two of his records with me."
- Ron Sexsmith

"Lightfoot's voice is such a part of the fabric of Canada, I know it almost as well as I know my own voice."
- David Foster

"I always knew Gordon Lightfoot was a really great songwriter, but his stuff even sounds better and better all the time. It's just so really good to me. It's just like that's what should be in a dictionary, you know, next to a really good contempory folk song, is a Gordon Lightfoot song." - John Prine

I have to tell you this funny Gordon Lightfoot story that I just heard... A friend of mine was playing a gig in Toronto recently and during his set he plays a GL cover. He didn't know untill he got off stage that Gordon had just happened to walk in and was standing 2 feet from the stage while he was playing it! Too funny!

This thread just now caught my eye, as I have spent the last few days learning this song. It is definably one of the nicest pieces I have learned to play. I have a pretty good midi file of the song that I use and I transcribe it to sheet music and then play along with the midi file. Don't know if this would help you much.

Hey Les,
I noticed you referenced Ron Sexsmith in the Gordon Lightfoot quotes. He's another super talented Canuck singer/songwriter. I think you'd like his tunes. He's got an unusual voice, but soothing and comforting.

Best not post as it`s prolly copyright.

Let me know if you want it.

I can certainly use that track, wjp1908. If you don't mind sharing it. I have the sheet music transcribed from a midi and that's all.
Thanks,
