Kirk,
You were right the first time. It's an Amaj9. The 3 is hiding on the third string at the 6th fret.
The voices, low to high, are 5 1 7 3 9 5.
Here's a few more: Am add2 to AmMaj9 to Am9
---0---0---0---
---0---0---0---
---5---5---5---
---7---6---5---
---0---0---0---
---0---0---0---
Here's an A7 I learned from Jerry Reed:
---0---
---5---
---0---
---7---
---0---
---0---
An Em add 2:
---0---
---0---
---0---
---4---
---2---
---0---
Try moving the note on the 5th string up to 3 then 4 and back down for a James Bond vibe.
An A9:
---0---
---0---
---6---
---5---
---0---
---0---
Same shape as E7:
---0---
---0---
---7---
---6---
---x---
---0---
Enjoy,
Monk
