It is quite common to play chord fragments instead of full barre chords. You can see Kirk does that quite often in his lessons.

I knew about playing partial barres but found the partial chords (fragments) confusing at first. As soon as I see the root I automatically want to play it but after looking closer see that's not always correct. Thanks.
