Unchained Melody Lesson - Finger-pattern

Dear Sir

My name is kush and i'm from a small town in India. I have no one to guide me in learning the guitar and even to buy a guitar i have to travel for about 5-6 hours by road. I must say that your website has encouraged me a lot to learn (though i've been learning flat-picking for about 3 years now.) my dream is to master the finger-style playing , because i feel it feels so complete to play finger-style.

Sorry for going out of the subject, sir, i love this song and i'm starting with this one. I've completed the first 5 measures and i have a doubt regd the same. As i'm playing for about 3 years now, my left hand is quite developed, and i've starting fingerpicking only a few weeks earlier (ie i play a little and a few picking patterns). As you have mentioned, I have made it a rule that mostly the thumb plays the bass and the others the rest.

I would like to know, whether i have to follow a particular pickin-pattern or let my picking hand do its job, (though i'm quite comfortable, not thinking about which patterns i'm using)

Kindly guide me sir. And by the way , i love the waqy you have demonstarted this lesson's video.

Hi nagukush, welcome.

If you feel comfortable with the pattern you're using, stick with it. I did it my way because it felt right for me, so there's no need to copy it exactly.

Welcome to the guitar for beginners forum!
You've chosen a great starting fingerstyle piece, Captian Kirk sure knows his stuff.
If you need any help, just start a thread with your question. Don't worry about how your hand picks, everyone has their own style, just remember to keep your left hands thumb behind the neck and not hanging or sticking over, I'm still trying to fix this myself.

If you want advise on what guitar to buy, just start a thread or private message Ultimate Garage Band- http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/fo...do=newpm&u=535 he will sort you out with the guitars, also be sure to check out neilsonite's lessons, and also Captian Kirks beginner lessons, they may not be what you want to play, but they will help you to become a better fingerstyle player.

Dear all

I'm at the 13th measure of this song, where i have to hold the F-chord, and please advice whether it has to be barred????

, because the tab says to pick the 1st fret of the low "e" string. In the video Mr.Kirk does it by thumb i think, how does he do that???? is there other way round...

There are several ways you can do it. The trick is which way is best for you considering you have to move to those two 3s next. You can use your thumb like Kirk if you have big hands,but you don't want to make that a habit as it can damage your thumb in the long term. You don't need to bar the full F chord,in fact doing that will have you tripping over your own fingers when you go for the 3s. Just arch your index to catch the E string and the 3rd finger on the third string. Hit the 3s next with what ever fingers feel comfortable. If you have big hands, you can use your first and second finger or first and third to hold the 3s and your pinky to play the 5. For small hands,you could simply bar the two 3s with your index finger and use your 3rd finger to play the 5. Remeber that you not only have to think about how you are holding the current chord,but how that will effect the ease with which you can move to a new chord. Hope that helps.
