I spent about 3 hours yesterday on a buddies MIM strat and i'm thinking it will probably be my next purchase (not his, but one like it). Plays pretty nice and has the difference in tone i'm looking for. Still like my Dean better. It depends alot on the style music you want to play and how the guitar is setup. You really have to go out and try them for yourself. If you pick up a guitar with humbuckers it's going to be different then a guitar with single coils. Not to say one is better then the other, but "different". Don't limit yourself to specific brands. Try everything you can get your hands on. What you end up liking may surprise you.
