The SM57 sets the standard for dynamic mics. That said, I use a condensor mic to record. Dynamic mics can handle higher pressure waves and don't require a power source to operate. Condensor mics are better suited for lower pressure waves and do require a power source to operate. I'd say you can't go wrong with the SM57; it's one mic that can record virtually ANYTHING from acoustic instruments to amplifiers to even vocals. Sure, there are individual mics that can probably do one of those better than an SM57, but I don't think you'll find ONE mic that does all THREE of those as well as the SM57.
