For a beginner, I'd recommend a multi-FX pedal. These units electronically emulate the popular individual pedal types, so you get a flanger pedal and a compressor pedal and a distortion pedal etc all in one unit.

You can also more than one pedal together and save the result as a patch. Most of them also have a built-in tuner, and a simple drum machine - don't dismiss these, as the two most important aspects of playing with others are being in tune and being on time!

Models? Look for Zoom or Digitech - anyone recommend any others?
