Many different woods are used to make guitars. Mahogany is used very often. "Pinewood" is not specific enough. Spruce might be called a "pinewood" but it is sure nothing like the pinewood you use for contruction. Typically the sides and back of acoustic guitars are mahogany, rosewood, maple, koa and a few others less common. The top of an acoustic guitar is most commonly spruce. Sitka spruce is very common followed by a number of other varieties of spruce (Englemann, Adirondack...). Cedar - very similar to spruce but a little softer - is fairly common for guitar tops. Mahogany and Koa are sometimes used for tops, but less often. That being said, there are guitars made of almost anything out in the world. Some good, some not so good. The mainstay in the industry is spruce top on mahogany or rosewood sides & back.
