I've always found the forum search pretty inadequate too. I've just gone and changed it over to another search method. It seems to work a bit better... Just when you are searching for a phrase, it's best to put quote marks around it otherwise it will search word by word.
For example:
So instead of just typing in - tuning my guitar - type in - "tuning my guitar" - instead. That should give you more accurate results.
Also, if you go to the advanced search page and click on the "Show Results as Posts" instead of Threads, you will be taken directly to the post in that thread that shows your search term. I find that makes it a bit easier to locate things in threads that span pages and pages.
