Hey Jason, the practical use of PT is basically that you can see at a glance how to play any type of chord or group of notes you can think of, and can as a result improvise very melodically over anything, no matter how difficult the chord progression. Because of the way guitar is traditionally taught, this skill is very difficult for most guitarists and usually takes a long time to develop. Luckily, PT makes it much easier and simpler and more enjoyable.

If you're having trouble, I really suggest posting some questions over at the PT forum, Kirk and I and everyone else will be happy to help you out.
