Hey Terry.
Stick with learning chords for a while longer, or at least learning their shapes and positions. I say this because if you want to play lead, chords hold the key to which notes you should choose. Scales are a good way to exercise your fingers, but melody resides in chords, not scales. I have never thought "scales" once, in all the years I've been playing, nor have I ever practiced them.
Changing between chords takes time to master, left or right handed. Just persevere for a while longer, teach your muscles the moves required. They will remember, trust me, and when they do, you'll just do it, as Nike says.
Chords are the most important thing you can know about a piece of music, so stick at it.
