It's a bit difficult knowing where you're going wrong with the lesson -- without being there, I mean -- but the 'root' note is the 'main' note of the key. It's the first note of the mother scale of the key. So if the tune is in G, for example, the root will be a G note; if it's in the key of A, the root will be A.
Simple as that.
