I made a quick diagram of G Major and E Minor (quick adataption of my other ones), so we're all on the same page. I started doing the intro and quickly realized I need to know what notes I can add in and what not, so here they are. The circles are where the roots are, the yellows are the perfect seconds, light blue minor third, dark blue major third, orange perfect 4th, red perfect 5th, light green minor 6th, dark green major 6th, light purple minor 7th, dark purple major seventh. So, we dont have to play this song note for note (its a jam band), so looking at this we see what notes are in key, we can play other notes too but they may not sound good when another layer goes on but they might sound good. good luck everyone, lets do it!
(I play a seven string so on the G Major diagram ignore the bottom string that's the low b on a seven string, on the E minor i left out the low b but you can tell it used to be there, the diagrams are std tuning (low to high) Eadgbe)
The related chords for G Major are: G, Am, Bm, C, D, Em and F#diminished
(if you capo the second fret the fingerings are: F (for G), Gm (for Am), Am (for Bm), A# (for C), C (for D), Dm (for Em), Ediminished (for F#dimo7).)
If you dont know the related chords, or you dont know the chords if you capo a fret its fine, you can record a layer of triads. We can do a number of final recordings, like i think it'd be cool if there wasn't even a track of chords, like we could have 2 or 3 tracks of people playing triads instead, there are so many different ways we can go about a grateful dead song.
If you learn how to play songs, then you learn songs. If you learn how to improvise, then you learn music.
