I've lurked over on rec.audio.pro newsgroup on and off for a while. For the most part they are exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful if not always polite
. People quite often post there to ask questions such as yours and they ususally get valuable responses. A lot of the posters are professional sound people. So I suggest you ask your question there.
Another compressor that gets rave reviews on that newsgroup is FMR's RNC (Really Nice Compressor) - it's about $200 and is very good. I own one along with FMR's RNP (really nice preamp).
