Hey guys,
I've been working on my tunes and trying to get the sound I really want. Recording sound, I should say. And it's elusive! Of course, those who know me know I'm a big Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne fan. TP is cool enough but add JL into the mix, as it were, and you have an extremely crisp sound. I am working toward that Tom Petty Wildflowers/Full Moon Fever/Highway Companion/Traveling Wilbury's sound
I'm not a recording guru but I can hold my own with the equipment I have. Here's the short and sweet:
Line6 Pod2 .0 (not the XT.... .very midi capable ... great tones but certain channels create unwholesome noise)
Behringer UB1202 (has not failed me... but likes to add a tab bit of noise)
Nady CM 88 Condenser (not too sure I like this mic .. seems to muddy/deaden the acoustic tones)
MXL 990 Condenser (awesome)
I use Audacity 1.3 Beta as the transport and I have a multitude of plugins and VST's to play with, A to Z. I rarely use the plugins anymore except perhaps the stock compressor on individual tracks.
I am looking at the
Behringer T1952 Tube Compressor and the
BBE 482i Maximizer to get a better sound. I've read the reviews. Both get good reviews. Both are nicely priced from MF and in the realm of "Recording Wad".
Heres my question(s):
For all you recording gurus, I'm wanting to create that Tom Petty solo sound for under $200 bucks. Of the two pieces I mention which do you think would help me toward my goal? Or am I way off base and need to start over?

Of course, I am very open to suggestions to help better my recording performance.
Thanks folks.
