Did you hear me calling?

For those who like the story:
This song is based on an accident in a local mine. the whole story is very harrowing so I chose just one part of it.
As one shift was ending and another beginning, some men and boys were were being brought up the pit shaft. Part of the machinery at ground level (weighing 17 tons) broke away and fell into the shaft, when it hit the ascending cage some of the support ropes at one side were broken, tipping it over and some of the men were thrown into the shaft.
Of those men left clinging to the cage, one of them called down the shaft to his son who was one of the people thrown out into the darkness. The song is based on this part.
The debris which fell down the shaft completely blocked the way out for the men and boys below and 205 of them died, 3 of them were aged 10 years.

Excellent...great song, epic story, good blend, haunting vocals.. the image of the father hanging by a cable calling to his son will stay with me all the rest of my days. I have my own picture now, a picture of love and lossand how we all just might be hanging by a thread

Thank you Mattz196, I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank so much for describing my song as being sung "with feeling and grace", I really appreciate that.

Smort,
Thank you, I know that you know how it feels to try and put into a song something that's very deep. I tried for over a week to get this song recorded (after it was written) but I kept crying when I pictured the man calling to his son and imagining his pain, it gets to me still. Well, that really messes up the recording!

Thank you Tomg 123.

Pamelody, thank you too, it's incredibly good to know that someone can be moved by a song that I've written (I hope I never get used to it).

Todd, thank you, and you're welcome, glad you enjoyed it.

**

I can seriously relate to the tune. We live near one of the coal mining regions of Appalachia. We have suffered several loses of fine men to mining disasters in the past couple of years.

Of course, Appalachia is home to many children of Scot/Irish/English descent. They have been here since the first settlers. These great folks and families have molded the music of Appalachia.

Your song would be received well here and bring home many tears of remembrance to those families who have lost their fathers, husbands and sons to the crushing grip of black coal.

Thanks for this melody, John. Excellent.

Great song Jomi, my grandfather was killed in a coal mine accident in the very region Les was describing, so it was especially close to home...again, well done.

Thanks Lcjones,
Same all over this region and others ...and Wales, there could be quite a list. In fact I chose the hester pit disaster from a very big list and those were only in the UK.

Thank you kiendoc,
My grandad was a miner too, he didn't die in the mines but had a very serious back injury caused by a roof collapse. My Dad wasn't a miner but he worked in mines for a time, he was a bricklayer and he lined shafts and tunnels with brick.

Great song Jomi. Very good use of echo on the vocals. Some while back we had a discussion on the forum about sad songs in a major key/happy songs in a minor (pun not intended) key. There weren't that many in either list but this is certainly one that could be added to it.
