As I'm more familiar with the Gary Moore tune "Still got the Blues" than those that Clancy and your friend mentioned, I recognized the similarity to Gary's tune immediately. I even went to the tab of "Still got the Blues" and could see its similar chords. Don't worry though, there's enough difference (I hope!) that Moore's lawyers won't be coming after you.

A great tune Kirk. Thanks man. As a rank beginner blues player (I can strum simple 12-bar blues in any key in either open or barre chords but that's my total limit) the theory of this piece is a little over my head (it doesn't start in its key???

) but I guess being overwhelmed is better than underwhelmed eh?

As my unrealistic goal in life would be to be a fingerpicking blues player (my forum name sums me up totally and honestly) I will learn to play this piece if only because it was written due to my suggestion.

It's ironic that I order a new guitar today and I get a piece written because of me. A great day!

You're most welcome, TenThumbs. It was your post that prompted this lesson.

Just to clear up the key question: it doesn't start on the 'One' chord of its key, that's all. Keys consist of 7 related chords, and usually tunes start on the One Chord, namely the chord that's built on the first degree of the scale that underlies that key. In this case, the tune starts on the Four Chord, the chord built on the fourth degree of the scale, which is Dm. But it's still in the key.

There, now I've thouroughly confused you, but don't worry about all that stuff. Just get your fingers to and from the required frets, inject some musicality into it and have fun.

As for the lawyers, chord progressions can't be copyrighted, so they're out of luck.

Very Cool Kirk!!!

I have always loved this chord progression since I learnt it, & it's nice to see you do it using open chords.

By a strange coincidence I stumbled across this the other day, it's how to add a Flamenco Rhumba right hand technique to this very progression (well almost this progression, they are not as adventurous as you & start on Am), anyway scary stuff not for the faint hearted. I hope one day when I get enough mojo I will be able to play it. Hope you enjoy it

Brilliant lesson, Kirk!!

Yesterday I sat down and learnt the Easy version of "Over the Rainbow" and the tricky version of "Silent Night". Today's assignment is definitley going to be this one.

Unfortunately, I have to play it on my electric guitar... It doesn't sound bad, but I much prefer finger-picking on Nylon strings. Which I currently have none of.

Oh, a little bit of information: Over here in Spain, they call the Blues "El Blues"... Which is a bit odd, considering "Blues" is plural and "El" isn't... I think it's probably due to the fact that, in English, "The" can be both plural or singular, whereas the Spanish are more nit-picky and have El, La, Los y Las for "The"... Languages are an interesting little thing.

I'm not being nit-picky, I just thought some of you might find that interesting

I'm off to go learn the song, then!
