Kirk's Weekly Lessons
Quite a few new lessons have been posted since the last newsletter. Here they are:
Bossa Nova Rhythm Guitar ... a fairly advanced look at this great Brazilian rhythm pattern using some appropriate sounding chords. Not for beginners, but not overly challenging. The basic pattern consists of an alternating bass line against three-finger plucks.
Bossa Nova Rhythm Guitar
FunkE acoustic ... another intermediate lesson, this time a funky 12 bar in E combining chord fragments, bass lines and riffs. Great fun to play and good for developing finger independence and timing skills.
Funk E Acoustic
Way back When ... a fairly simple original finger style piece in the key of G. It's a little trickier than it sounds but once you lock the anticipated melody notes into place, it's a nice one to play.
Way Back When
Easy Pickin' ... one for beginners looking to get into finger picking. A nice rolling pattern that can be used on countless occasions, a sort of 'standard' pattern. This one is in C, using nice open chords in a very familiar sounding progression.

Solidwalnut's Lessons
Member Steve Cass, aka solidwalnut, has also posted quite a few new lessons including some with video. The easiest way to find them all is to go to the list he has compiled of all his lessons:
Solidwalnut's Lesson Guide...Find it here!
Fretsource's Lessons
Member Fretsource has been adding to his very comprehensive lesson on standard notation, the true written language of music. We twangers are lucky to have tablature, the dumbed down version of notation, but to truly communicate with other musicians, standard notation is the way to go.

Tekker's Lessons
Member Tekker has just added a great new lesson on Computer Recording: What You Need To Get Started - so if you want to get into recording, here are the basics of what you'll need to get started.

PlaneTalk - The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book/DVD >
http://www.thatllteachyou.com
Does this sound like you? You've mastered the basics, you know all your main chord shapes, you've learned some scales and you have a pretty good idea of how music is structured; you've learned some tunes and can play them through and you've learned some riffs and licks and solos note for note. Now you want to know how to make up your own, you want to be able to improvise and invent your own bits and pieces, you want to know how to use the whole fretboard without getting lost ... you want to know the trick.
You're in luck! That's exactly what PlaneTalk teaches, and it does without once telling you to learn all those scales and modes and box patterns. There is a much easier and fool-proof way of navigating the fretboard. The book explains it in a uniquely user-friendly way; the DVD graphically demonstrates it; the
slide rule which comes with the book crystallizes the simple mind-set and the PlaneTalkers Forum allows you to discuss the technique with me and hundreds of others on a daily basis. I can confidently say that it's the simplest yet most powerful guitar lesson you will ever learn, and once properly digested will become the only thought process you need to negotiate any tune of any genre in any key.
Here are some comments from recent PlaneTalkers:
"Wow! The book made me feel so dumb and so enlightened at that same time. All these years I never noticed some of the things your book showed me."
"You did an awesome job with this book, I just wish I could have seen this 20 years ago."
"One quick trip through the DVD and I'm a believer."
"No light bulbs went off as I began reading PlaneTalk - it was more like the 4th of July with each successive page!"
"That (reading PlaneTalk) was the single most important thing I'd ever done with regards to playing the guitar"

The Slide Guitar in Standard and Dropped D tunings DVD >
http://www.bottleneckguitar.com/
Slide guitar is such a fun way to play. I've been doing it since about 1969 and doing it in standard tuning, or sometimes dropping that bass string down to D. Open tunings are great and give you that traditional sound, but standard is just as rich and allows you to merge both normal playing and slide into one hybrid style that really perks the ears up. Have a look at my latest blues video at YouTube (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khp1yUVpmLU ) to see what I mean. If you want to learn more about the art, check out the DVD I put together, 70 minutes of solid learning. I go through the basics of slide techniques; vibrato; muting; chords; double stops; single notes lines; playing behind the slide and merging it all together.
