Received the materials today. I have to say it was very interesting for an old player. I think Kirk has developed a fresh way of teaching musical technique. But it's more than that ... if appears to be a fresh way to look at creating melodies. One thing I'd like to change about my playing is to become more melodic and less scale like ... I think this is an interesting approach toward that end.
The materials I bought cost about the same thing as a pedal might cost. So it's reasonably priced for me ... if it teaches me something new. The
Plane Talk book with the DVD is sort of the core. I also bought the
slide DVD and a computer disc that plays video lessons related to the 12-bar blues that was interesting.
I think the slide DVD shows a lot of tricks for muting, vibrato, etc. I was glad to find that many were things I do now BUT if I were just starting to play slide, these tricks would be mysteries. For instance, I mute my strings the same way that Kirk teaches but it developed for me over years. It would have been nice to have someone show me that in the beginning.
I would recommend it for new players ... but I think that guys that have been playing a while might find a way to break into some new lines. I think it will help me do that ... there ya go.
