I think trying to "make" a certain sound could be restrictive, unless you're a tribute band. Far better to make your OWN sound - let it morph, wander and/or settle based upon the chemistry of your band. You'd be more distinctive and memorable that way, instead of being "just another band that sounds like <insert famous band here>."
Some of the best cover songs I've ever heard sounded a lot different than the originals. It was enjoyable and refreshing to hear a different interpretation of the song.
