Its different if your a solo artist, you have theoretical freedom to add "anything" to the mix... and just rework the arrangement for whatever you have along for the live performance.
But if you set out to make a "sound like band x" then will you fire the excellent bass player you found because he's a little jazzy?
In a Band the sound is defined by the combination of various styles AND the production of the material.

Excellent post! When people ask me 'what sort of music does your band play?' I have to give a long answer... it seems the style grows and morphs with each new addition to the set list.
