Hug me like you care

I live and work in the north east of England and my job takes me all over the region. One day I came across a very pretty young woman lying on the ground, I tried for a while to rouse her but there was no response, I was going to phone for an ambulance when a young boy aged about 10 or 11 in a school uniform came up and told me it was ok, she was his mother and she was 'high', she'd be ok in a while. He sat beside her and stroked her hair and rubbed her hands to warm them. I walked on my way through a land of smashed bottles and boarded windows, I didn't realise at the time but it had affected me deeply, I can still picture the scene like it was yesterday.

I'd like to write more songs and I'd appreciate your comments including criticism, be gentle but don't hold back (he says, quaking).
I know that a bit of my local accent comes through in the song, is that good or bad?

thanks,

John

I thought this was excellent ... I like your voice as well.

I tried to think of artists I would like to see perform this song. I think it's very James Taylor ... I would like to hear him do this too.

Great job!

Jomi - I've seen this thread floating near the top of the forum for a while now, but just got the time to sit and listen to your song. The guitar work was great, and your vocals fit the song perfectly - the combination of the two really set the mood. Don't even give a second thought to your accent....there's absolutely nothing objectionable about it. In fact, I thought it added a great flavor to the song that would have been missing (IMO) had somebody sung it in perfectly unaccented English.

You've definitely got a winner on your hands there - I look forward to hearing more of your songs!

Doveman, thank you very much

Stratrat, thank you too, I didn't reply earlier because I know that bumps the song back to the top and it seemed a bit unfair, but now that other people have posted too, well, it's just to impolite not to!

WitchyWoman, thank you very much for your comments, I'm really happy that you class my song as a work of art

Thank you Vetinari I think Skinnybloke is looking forward to that too!!

Your vocals are stunning, Jomi, I'd duet with you anytime! And the lyrics rang true and clear to me, although I do like the slight change to 'Ma' espoused by Doty earlier on - that would lead one naturally to the truth and tragedy of the situation. Sad, what we do to our kids, huh?

Sometimes life sucks, but often it smells of roses, and if there was a smiley of one, I'd offer it to you now, after pouring your heart out into this lovely tune that leaves me, after listening to it again and again, with tears streaming from my eyes.

Thank you, Jomi, this one is relegated to my 'blue days' folder, for there are times when you just need a good cry, you know?

Elle

Elle,
Thank you so much, it's hard for me to describe how it makes me feel to know that the words I wrote have moved someone to tears,
it's really very very humbling.
I should tell you that the vocals are fattened quite a bit with reverb in Adobe Auditions - still interested in a duet?

Any day, any time, Jomi...your FAT vocals are beautiful! LOL

You honestly work magic with your voice, and whether you're doing it with software, or, as I believe, with your own unique gift, it's wonderful to hear.

John:

That was a very beautiful song. Love the accent. My last name is Laird and my mothers name is Campbell. I really get into the British accents in music. Guess it is in the blood. Even when I here bagpipes I get goosebumps. Thanks for sharing a great song.

Wow - didn't expect to see this again, but now it's here I'll use the opportunity to sneak in an updated version - nothing new just a better recording.

Thanks a lot Danny, glad you enjoyed the song .. and the accent!

That was beautifully done John. Don't be critical of your accent because I really think it brings out the beauty of the song and it enhances that melancholy side as well.

A very touching story about the young woman lying on the ground who turned out to be the mother of a young boy. Unfortunately it's an all too common thing in the world these days. But I can see how it inspired the song for you.
