My cheapie
Hi everyone, I thought I'd post a picture of my cheapie Les Paul style hollow bodied jazz guitar. I got it from a 'well-known-auction-site' and paid 78 pounds sterling (inc. S&H from Germany) which is about $150 U.S. It's about to have a set up and new flatwound strings put on it.

Thanks. Although it is indeed a "cheapie" (starter, whatever) I like its looks too. As far as sound goes in relation to other guitars, I really couldn't tell you. I haven't had much experience trying out guitars in stores and bought this one online thru musician's friend. Got the guitar, a nice Marshall practice amp, and a good hardshell case all for about $260 delivered to my door. The one thing that's a slight bother to me is that it's kind of hard to keep in tune; though I already knew that from the reviews I read prior to buying it.

I was looking at Kiepers guitars on ebay and sent them loads of emails asking whether any of there electrics were left handed. Never got one answer. Even sent one email in German. (That hurt) and they still didnt reply so ended up buying a Aria Pro II Knight Warrior left handed for £72 instead. Im happy enough though. It looks the part.
I digress, that is really nice looking by the way......
I'd sell my soul for a Left Handed BC Rich Warlock....

Well I got my cheapie 78 quid jazzer back last night, after my tutor took it to the guitar shop where he works for a complete set up and my goodness what a difference ! The action is lower, the bridge has been completely reset, the intonation has been set, the freboard has been cleaned (seems 'smoother') and it has been fitted with flatwound D'adarrio Chrome Jazz Light 11's and it sounds delicious (my wife's description but I like it). The flatwound strings are silky smooth and feel great to my 13 week newbie fingers. I play both my guitars through a Kustom KAA16 acoustic amp and the jazzer sounds rich and warm through the neck pup, brighter but still mellow through both together and crystal clear through the bridge pup. I'm even more impressed with my cheapie jazzer now and I'm loving all the maj7ths, m7ths and 7b5 chords I'm learning on it ! Thirty of our British beer vouchers well spent !!
I'm now considering getting my 'principle' Guvnor GA575CE electro acoustic 'stage' guitar set up later in the year and fitted with flatwounds. My tutor thinks it would sound nice and, going off the change made to my jazz guitar, I think it would too. The body of my acoustic is maple and very very slim indeed (no deeprer than the heel of the neck) and I think the 'warmth' of the flat wound strings' tone would compliment this making the current bright 'zingy' tone more mellow and possibly even 'nylon' like in timbre. Don't get me wrong, I like the sound of it now with the 12s on there but I think the flatwound 11's would sound nicer and, coupled with the lighter gauge and a slightly lower action, would be easier to play. I think my only concern would be a slight loss in acoustic volume from the 11's. Any thoughts from the more experienced would be welcome.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
