Whereabouts are you in Michigan? I'm in the Flint area and I know that there is a big group of bluegrass musicians that get together for jam sessions (or whatever a bluegrass player would call it
) once a month at a local school. I haven't gone yet, but I understand that there are several players that are learning the style by playing with and getting tips from the experienced players there. Might look for such a group in your area- maybe ask around at the local music store.
