I'm a fellow Aussie (that's 3 of us here on this site I've 'met' in the past hour) and also a beginner guitarist. Mind you, I've spent more time saying "Hi" to people than trying to learn the guitar, hehe.
Good luck to you matey and I hope you're a professional in no time. Your dad will be proud of you - especially as he bought you the guitar.
I can't offer you much help - but I can offer you encouragement!! I guess the most important thing is to enjoy the lessons. Hope we can both do that.
