OK Bennett,
I'm in. We have all weekend to make a minute and a half recording,(better make that two minutes-I'm still a little slow), for the whole world to critique
Good luck and we'll see you same bat channel, same bat time for our own reviews.
All the best.
Mike

Hey Mike!
Well, I've taken up the challenge ... and what a challenge it was. I really thought I was doing better with the song than I actually was.
Nevertheless, it's forced me to self-evaluate and understand some areas in my technique that need work.
Thanks for giving me that little nudge.
Anyway, see what you think; I've posted in the Recordings forum.
Cheers!

Hi Bennett,
Man I thought I was a lot smoother but recordings don't lie.
You seemed a little rushed and I may have to change my name to "Ole Molassas"
Keep at it my friend.

Hey Mike,
It's amazing how a simple recording can show us things that we hadn't picked up earlier.
I've been working on slowing it all down and making the whole piece flow better. It seems to be coming together which is great.
Hopefully I'll make another recording before too long.
Cheers.

Sounds good Bennett.
After my recording I went back to the tabs Kirk provided and saw that it wasn't learned correctly. I was trying to memorize the tune but I wasn't heeding my own advise. If my kide have heard it once they've heard it a million times; Practice doesn't make perfect, Perfect practice makes perfect. So it's a couple steps back to regroup and polish.
The growth experienced trying to learn this song is unbelievable. When starting this lesson I was thrilled to learn a bar or two in a few nights. Now the comfort level is at a point where note sequences, hammers, pulloffs and of course slides are the focus on a practice session. Going with the slow and steady wins the race plan.
Instead of getting all down on myself this site has helped me stay upbeat and enthusiastic about learning.
Thanks to all who contribute and offer friendly support.

The tab is correct Guy. Perhaps it's just a timing issue, it's difficult to get the timing from the tab. Watching the video or listening to the mp3 will help with that. Can you be a bit more specific?

You're right, it's just a timing thing, I'm able to get it every once in a while when I'm playing along with Kirk. thank you.

Tab Question?
Hello all, in measure 20 in Kirk's tab lesson what does the smaller "1" represent? It's the C note in that measure, it follows a full sized number "1".
Thanks.

The little 1 is actually associated with the next note, the '0'. It means pull off from the first fret to the open string.
I just listened to it; oddly enough, it's the slightly flubbed note in the piece that you're asking about.

Ah, thanks Kirk! That explains it. I'll have to watch the video real close for that move. Thanks again.

I love the song Vincent, especially hearing Don McLean singing it along with him and Chet Atkins playing together, before I found Kirk's lesson I was playing the voice part by ear, just one note at a time, for me it sounds pretty good since I don't play well. I've been practicing Kirk's lesson pretty much daily for about a month now and still don't do well with it, I just don't do well reading tab, seems I have to have it down pat in my memory to make it sound anywhere near decent, I'm going to stay with it though.

I can't imagine anyone actually sight-reading tab, Skip. I think we all have to get these pieces down pat in our memory, so don't feel left out. The more you do it though, and the more you see the similarities and connections between different pieces, the easier it becomes and the more your hand will automatically know what to do.

Tagged melody line
I'm pretty much a beginning finger style player and something that would be extremely helpful to me would be if the notes in the melody were for example red, or some color that separates them from the "filler" notes. I know this would be somewhat of a crutch, but hey I need to walk before I can run ....
Thanx for all Kirk
