I'd reckon that it would be very unusual for a new songwriter to come up with something that was completely fresh on their first attempts.

I remember reading a quote somewhere (can't remember by who) saying something like "I've done loads of good and original work. The only trouble is that the stuff that's good isn't original, and the stuff that's original isn't good...."

Accidental plagiarism is the bane of any writer's life - songs or words. Everybody fears unconsciously dredging up something from their memory and re-using it.

According to a story I read, Andrew Lloyd Webber had just written a song that would go on to become one of his biggest hits and was polishing it up and going through the process of making sure he hadn't copied something. He apparently asked his Dad "Does this sound like anything??" To which Dad replied "Yes - sound like about a million bucks to me...." . (although he probably said "quid" not bucks..).

I'd just keep writing and enjoying yourself. If you're happy with the result you can add some more 'originality' in the arrangement later. Your songs will get more 'you' as you progress and "find your voice" as they say. Find your feet first - work on the fancy moves later....
