Hopefully this will encourage you. I learned to play fingerstyle when I was 52 years old. After a few lessons, and with Kirk's book, I feel very comfortable playing chord style melodies and single line jazz improvisations. It just takes practice. Keep on going. What someone else can learn, you can learn too. Now ten years later, I can keep up with the pros.
Set yourself a target of say 2-3 years to master chords, and learn to find melodies on the strings. Understanding chords and melody will help you greatly.
Theory is knowing about. Practice is knowing how.
