F chord and strumming while changing chords

Hello All,

My first post since I registered.

I think I have all the major chords down, C, D, E, A, and G but I don't understand the "F" chord - I don't know where to place my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers because on the chord chart I got from Esteban, it is very confusing.

Also, I try to strum my guitar and change the chords and I can't, I have to stop to change chords...I feel like I will never get it and i start to get discouraged....

please help cause I want to continue to play

You don't stop doing things because you get old.. you get old because you stop doing things.

Simple, perhaps, but isn't the warmup and practice a bit too long? My warmup takes about 3 minutes. It may not be enough, but I rather spend most of my time learning chords.

I don't warm up... I just dive right in. it works for me though because I'm still young and nimble, bones haven't become old yet.

Hi,
it is my second year and i can play barre chords like F, G, A etc..but after playing for 10 to 15 minutes, my thumb (base of the thumb)starts paining like crazy and i have to stop for 15 seconds before i can continue. My thumb actually presses the head quite forcefully. is it quite natural for everybody?

Regards,
Rajesh

After looking at the suggestions and recommendations on this site I finally understand what a Barre chord is supposed to look like and I think I am finally getting a little more control over my fingers. Great Thread...

I'd say that you are gripping the neck too hard rajesh. The thumb should provide support but you shouldn't have to press very hard with it. Try to use your arm, wrist and shoulder more. When playing barre chords you can also use your strumming arm to push back against the body of the guitar.

thanks for the tip..i will certainly try that. pressing the guitar against the body using the strumming hand is indeed a great idea...

Rajesh

si16,
Thanks for your tip, now i am able to play for long. At one time i was hopelessly demoralized and you gave me a very good tip. I am sure there are other people who are suffering from the same syndrome .
