First of all I am new on this site and other than my post in introductions this is my first reply here.
One great thing about the guitar (and other instruments) is the rewards you get in small success's. Everytime you practise some small reward comes your way. It is what keeps us coming back. Your goal might be to play to a packed house at the ACC one day but the joy is the fun in getting there.
You are on the right track. Practice that A chord and within a day or two you will wonder why you thought it was difficult. Then build upon that and so on.
If I can offer some small advise here:
Understand/learn how that Achord is built. All major chords (without extensions) are derived from the 1st,3rd and 5th notes of the major scale. Therefore scales and chords are interchangable, you can't have one without the other so to speak.
So, in the case of A you have the following notes A, C# and D. Now you can have more notes but that is another lesson. However, in open chords like the one's I am sure you are learning some of notes are duplicated nad that is o.k. because it make's the chord sound fuller.
Try this as an exercise, find those 3 notes in a group elsewhere on the neck(hint: 5th fret low E string is an A note). You might find that another version of that chord is easier to play. Just because the tab of a song says to play it there doesn't mean you must! :-)
I wish you luck and I hope you take this advise in the vein for which I intended it to be, as friendly help.
